I
For a sin I sinn’d long years ago.
Satan had me under his foot.
The fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Evil.
Grinn’d with malice when I fell:
Sad to record such shameful things.
I should have wept with blood for tears;
I should have wept with tears of blood!
’Twould curse his life with fire and shame;—
Who is the whole of my desire;
O me! my heart’s a burning woe!
