Ape

An ape may chance to sit among the doctors.

An ape’s an ape, a varlet’s a varlet,
Though he be dressed in silk or scarlet.

An ape’s an ape, though he wear a gold ring.

An ape is ne’er so like an ape,
As when he wears a doctor’s cape.

An old ape hath an old eye.

An old ape never made a pretty grimace.French.

As fond of it as an ape is of a ball or whip.

The ape claspeth her young so long that at last she killeth them.

The higher the ape climbs the more he shows his bald haunches.French, German.
