Johannes Matthias Firmenich-Richartz (1808–1889)
Firmenich-Richartz, Johannes Matthias (fēr’men-iċh-riċh’ärts). A German poet, philological literary critic and student, and dramatist; born in Cologne, July 5, 1808; died in Potsdam, May 10, 1889. His play ‘Clotilde Mentalvi’ (1840), a romantic tragedy, and ‘After a Hundred Years,’ a humorous dialogue, as well as poems in various languages, are meritorious; but his monumental achievement is ‘Germany’s Folk Voices: A Collection of German Dialect Poems, Songs, Fables, Sagas, etc.’ (1843–66, sup. 1868).
