Clement Clarke Moore (17791863)
Moore, Clement Clarke. An American educational writer and poet; born in New York City, July 15, 1779; died in Newport, RI, July 10, 1863. He was the compiler of the first Hebrew and Greek lexicon published in America, and the author of a book of ‘Poems’ (1844), in which is included his best-known poem, ‘A Visit from St. Nicholas’ (“‘Twas the night before Christmas”). He was the donor of the extensive grounds on which the General Theological Seminary, New York City, stands.
