Andreas Horváth (1778–1839)

Horváth, Andreas (hōr’vät). A Hungarian poet; born in Pázmánd, Nov. 25, 1778; died there, March 7, 1839. He became a Catholic priest soon after attaining manhood. He created the classic epic in Hungarian literature. His principal works are: ‘Memorial of Zircz’; and the heroic poem ‘Arpád,’ in twelve cantos, for which he was awarded a prize by the Hungarian Academy. He became a member of this body in 1832.
