Chapter 28.5, Problem 12P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: The E or Z configuration to the double bonds in neoprene is to be assigned. The stereoisomer of neoprene in which the double bonds have the opposite configuration is to be drawn.

Concept introduction: The E or Z configuration of the double bonds is determined by prioritizing the groups attached to the carbon atoms of the double bond. The groups are prioritized on the basis of atomic number of their atoms. The group that contain atom with higher atomic number is given higher priority. When the groups with same priority are on the same side of the double bond the configuration is Z and when the groups are on the opposite side of the double bond then the configuration is E.

Rank the conformations of n-butane with reference to its potential energy from the most stable to the least stable. Rank from the most stable to the least stable. To rank items as equivalent, overlap them.
Stereoisomers share the same connectivity and differ only in the way their atoms are arranged in space. Draw the structure of a compound that is a stereoisomer of cis-1,2- dibromocyclobutane. (Note that the question asks for a different stereoisomer of the named compound and not the named compound itself.) • Use the wedge/hash bond tools to indicate stereochemistry where it exists. • In cases where there is more than one answer, just draw one.
Cyclopropane and cyclobutane have similar strain energy despite the fact that the C—C—C bond angles of cyclopropane are much smaller than those of cyclobutane. Suggest an explanation for this observation, considering all sources of strain discussed in Chapter 4.
