In the Yanomamo culture, warfare is practiced as a way to demonstrate the strength of a village, or individual. Overall, warfare is practiced in the Yanomamo culture because of a combination of factors. One of the proximate, or indirect, causes of the violence include seeking revenge for villagers who have been killed. Another proximate cause of violence that it is used to steal women from other villages in order to increase the number of available wives. Also, villages must appear intimidating and tough so that other villages do not raid them. These are a few of the proximate causes of violence. Competition over scarce resources is one ultimate, or root, cause of violence. Men who are violent may gain greater social status, which encourages violence overall. Another ultimate cause of the violence is the lack of strong political leadership within the villages. These villages do not have leaders to stop violence or structure violence in productive ways. Without such leaders, villagers are more likely to rely on violence in impulsive ways. Hostility between villages often results in violence, as there are no leaders to resolve the hostility. In addition, another ultimate cause of violence is the geographical environment of the Yanomamo. Since the Yanomamo territory is restricted, and often invaded by outsiders, available land becomes more scarce. This causes competition for land to increase, which increases violence. A book adds suspense whenever a great alteration comes about that forces a character to change their present situation. "The First Part Last" By Angela Johnson is one book where the situations in both the beginning, and the end vary in level of intensity and emotion from all characters involved. Only, in this book, The main character, Bobby, has to improve himself, so he can help his daughter, Feather, grow up with a parent who was there. To do this Bobby must change, become not just a man, but a good man. I think that for a sixteen year old kid, he did alright. i intend to prove it using a few symbols that i found within the pages of this book. With these ideals, i intend to state my case that Bobby did in fact become a man, and start both himself, and his daughter on the right path.

Another example of humanity’s struggle with violence theme happened when Kino killed a man in self-defense. Kino was caring and friendly; he would never intently mean to harm or kill anyone unless someone was bringing harm to him and the things that he loved. One night a “dark one” on the path attacked Kino as he was walking toward his brush hut. The “dark one” wanted Kino’s pearl and would do anything to get it.
