1 Psychosocial Theory and Human Development Jacqueline Woods University of Arizona Global Campus PSY 645: Psychopathology Dr. Karen-Sue Newby January 22, 2022
2 Psychosocial Theory and Human Development Mental health disorders and looking at them from human development theories helps to get a better understanding of mental health. Such as how the how the role of social situations plays a part in mental health and how its relevant to understanding the development of psychopathology is that of Erikson’s psychosocial theory. Learning more about human development theory, particularly psychosocial theory, and how it applies and can be used to analyze mental health disorders. The psychosocial theory or growth is a theory developed and introduced in 1950 by psychologist and psychoanalyst Erik Erikson (Orenstein et. al., 2022) to explain the eight stages that one goes through during one’s lifetime. During this time, one may go through struggles that play a part in one’s personality and development that is influenced by social, biological, and psychological. These stages start at the beginning of a person’s life and go on to the end, from infancy to old age. According to the psychosocial developmental theory, for members of society to be successful one would need to complete each stage and resolve conflicting states, such as trust versus mistrust and that of anatomy versus shame, according to Erikson's theory. Psychosocial Development Theory I find Erickson's developmental theory to be relevant and help with the understanding the development of psychopathology, and that it helps to understand why a person or what to look for in a person's individual stage and how it affected the person’s personality development. Erikson proposed eight development stages that a healthy human should go through from infancy to late adulthood, according to the Gale Encyclopedia of Psychology. It helps to look at each stage better and determine if it was completed or resolved correctly or if there was some conflict in one of the 8 stages during one’s lifetime.
3 Mental Health Concerns Hakim presented to office for help with mental health concerns and would like to get treatment. He reported that he had gone to the hospital with concerns before and was scheduled for a hospital discharge appointment. Upon speaking with Hakim, he asked about symptoms, the onset, frequency, and impact. He reported symptoms migraines, hallucinations of a spiritual nature, that started three months ago. He also reported voices and feelings of guilt. Hakim was also assessed for trauma and substance use. Developmental Trajectory In looking at Hakim’s presenting symptoms, I would say that his presenting problems does not align with the psychosocial theory. At Hakim’s current age he would be in the stages of adulthood, stage 6, Intimacy vs. Isolation. Hakim did not present at the time with any conflict of intimacy or did he present with symptoms of isolation. If one looks at the previous stage of identity versus identity diffusion, this stage represents the process of transition from childhood into adulthood, individuals start developing their beliefs system, values, sense of self, and goals (Karkouti, 2014). Since Hakim had just recently transitioned from military service to college student, however in the case study, no information was given on the transition. In evaluating mental health disorders through a theoretical lens, it has enhanced my understanding of the stages that one passes through throughout one’s life. It has helped me understand the stages of development and how they contribute to a stable foundation of core belief systems in relating to the self and the outer world (Orenstein et al., 2022). In learning the different stages and applying, one can determine if a patient has developed and properly gone through the stages of psychosocial development. These stages in development are defined by psychological tendencies and development of the ego of virtue or maldevelopment. In the use of Erikson’s stages, can be used to help treat those that may be facing certain points in their life
