Victor Henri Joseph Brahain Ducange (1783–1833)
Ducange, Victor Henri Joseph Brahain (dü-kä
zh’). A French poet and story-teller (1783–1833); born at The Hague. His first stories, ‘Agatha’ and ‘Valentine,’ were received with great favor; but the latter offended the Royalists and he was sent to jail for six months. Once more he offended with ‘Thelene, or Love and War,’ and had to take refuge in Belgium. Other novels are: ‘The Confessor-Doctor’; ‘The Artist and the Soldier’; etc. Of his numerous plays the best and most famed is ‘Thirty Years, or the Life of a Gambler.’
