Sir Robert Ayton (1570–1638)
Ayton, Sir Robert (ā’ton). A Scottish poet; born in his father’s castle of Kinaldie, Fifeshire, in 1570; died in London in Feb. 1638. His Latin and English verses made him famous at the courts of James I. and Charles I., where he held posts of honor and was knighted in 1612. Ayton is supposed, but probably without good grounds, to have been the author of ‘Auld Lang Syne,’ which was remodeled by Burns. (See Critical and Biographical Introduction).
