Lodovico Dolce (1508–1568)

Dolce, Lodovico (dōl’chā). An Italian poet and scholar (1508–68); born at Venice. His poems and prose works are of almost incredible number and variety; most memorable is the epic ‘First Impressions of the Enamored Orlando,’ which, though not to be compared with Ariosto, is one of the best specimens of the romantic epic of the sixteenth century. His elaborations of the Amadis legend, his romantic versions of the ‘Æneid’ and the ‘Odyssey,’ and his tragedies and comedies, are mediocre.
