Joseph Archer Crowe (1825–1896)

Crowe, Joseph Archer. An English historian of art and miscellaneous writer; born in London, Oct. 20, 1825; died at Gamburg, Sept. 6, 1896. He was long eminent as a journalist, and for a time served in the British diplomatic service. His celebrity rests mainly upon the ‘History of Painting in Italy’ (1864–71), the most important work on this subject, written in collaboration with G. B. Cavalcaselle. He also published other volumes on art subjects.
