Argyll, John Douglas Sutherland Campbell (är-gīl’), ninth Duke of; born in London, Aug. 6, 1845; died in 1914; married H. R. H. Princess Louise in 1871. He was Governor-General of Canada 1878–83, and author of ‘The United States after the War’ (1885); ‘Memoirs of Canada and Scotland’ (1884); ‘Canadian Pictures’ (1885); ‘Life and Times of Queen Victoria’ (1901); ‘Pages from the Past’ (1907).
