Gustave Desnoiresterres (18171892)
Desnoiresterres, Gustave (dā-nwär-tār’). A French novelist and literary historian (1817–92); born at Bayeux. Among his novels are: ‘The Black Chamber’ (1843); ‘Love on a Stage Coach’ (1853). He wrote several very valuable essays and monographs on the history of French literature and of French manners. The Academy crowned his greatest work: ‘Voltaire and French Society in the Eighteenth Century’ (8 vols., 1855).
