Emilio Castelar (1832–1899)
Castelar, Emilio (käs-tā-lär’). A Spanish orator, statesman, and writer; born at Cadiz, Sept. 8, 1832; died at Murcia, May 25, 1899. In early life he was a journalist. In 1864 he became professor of history in the University of Madrid. He was an eloquent leader of the Liberal party. He wrote many historical and political works; among them: ‘Civilization in the First Five Centuries of Christianity’; ‘Questions Political and Social’; ‘History of the Republican Movement in Europe’; ‘Historical Gallery of Celebrated Women’; ‘History’s Tragedies.’
