Baron Jean-Baptiste-Joseph Fourier (1768–1830)
Fourier, Jean-Baptiste-Joseph, Baron (fö-ryā’). A celebrated French mathematician and physicist; born in Auxerre, March 21, 1768; died in Paris, May 16, 1830. He was an active Jacobin during the French Revolution. His later energies were given up to science. ‘Analytical Theory of Heat’ (1822) is his most noted work; but in mathematics his speculations and methods are of permanent utility.
