Angelus Silesius (16241677)
Angelus Silesius (än’je-lus silē’shi-us), pseudonym of Johannes Scheffler. A German mystic and sacred poet (1624–77), brought up in the Lutheran faith, but in 1653 converted to Catholicism. His poems, some of which are exquisite sacred lyrics, appeared collected as ‘Spiritual Joys’ (1657) and ‘Cherubic Wanderer’ (1675).
