This research study measured the levels of Junior Social Work student compared to the stress levels of Senior Social Work students. In each year, there are different aspects of the program that can be stressful for students. The sample was drawn from junior and senior social work students from Ohio University in Lancaster, Ohio, there were n=23 juniors and n=14 seniors who responded. The researcher collected the data in person through a survey which measured their stress level on a scale from 1-10, with 1 meaning no stress at all and 10 meaning highly stressful. a T- test for independent samples was used to analyze the data that was collected. The results of the T-test for independent samples included a t= value of -.09911 and was compared …show more content…
The researcher collected the data in person through a survey which measured their stress level on a scale from 1-10, with 1 meaning no stress at all and 10 meaning highly stressful, we also asked question pertaining to why the felt their stress was at this level for this particular year, such as “What aspects of the current year did you find the most stressful.” “If you are a senior which year did you find the most stressful and why.” It is also important to note that this was based on your year in the program (cohort) and it was not based on your credit hours achieved. Some students are considered seniors based on their credit hours but are in the junior cohort, we are only interested in their stress levels based on the year of the program. The Independent variables include the year at which they are in the social work program, this was divided into two groups which were dependent on if you are a junior or a senior in the program. The dependent variable measured the amount of stress each group reported. The researcher used a T- test for independent samples to analyze the data that was collected.
Results
The mean for group one (Juniors) was 7.61and the standard deviation was 1.08. 7.61(1.08) group two (Seniors) the mean was 8.00 and the standard deviation was 1.30. 8.00(1.30) with a level of significance of .05.
It is clear that social workers play an important role in society; it would therefore make sense to ensure that the working conditions of social workers are kept to a high standard. Without these good working standards it is likely that social workers might be affected by the job related stresses that are inherent to jobs dealing with troubled people. These high job stresses may lead to greater turn over and unwillingness amongst students to become social workers. Consequently the methods by which social workers and their respective employers have been discussed in this essay and include things like being given greater autonomy over their own scheduling and how they choose to deal with clients. Social workers may also be able to improve their
Is there a significant difference in the level of stress management of the students under.
Social Work is a helping profession that strives to help the community on micro, mezzo, and macro levels. It is an investment of self to offer services and help to those in need. Areas of service can include, but are not limited to, traumatic situations, family situations, and child protection. As in most social service professions, the field of social work can often times take a toll on the emotional and physical stability of a social worker. One side effect from working in a helping profession is compassion fatigue. As a result, the National Association of Social Workers stresses the importance of self-care and its vitality in ensuring the social worker does not get burnt out by the profession.
Social workers deal with intense situations daily. It is important that social workers are aware of how they are affected by these interactions. Priscilla Dass-Brailsford explains in her book, that countertransference, vicarious trauma (VT), secondary traumatic stress, compassion fatigue and satisfaction, and burnout are all different ways that counselors can be affected (Dass-Brailsford, 2007). This is where it is important for social workers to have a plan of self-care and stress management resources to use.
b) What is the difference between the mean of the two groups? What is the difference in the standard deviation?
Social workers is a particularly hazardous profession due to high burnout rates, anxiety, substance use, depression, and suicide (Shanafelt, Boone, Tan, Dyrbye, Sotile, Satele, Oreskovich, 2012). Studies have found that there are two key factors were identified as relevant to social work burnout: age and setting (Brewer & Shapard, 2004; Schwartz, et al. 2007). The team found that younger social workers reported lower personal accomplishment, higher psychological strain, and higher levels of depersonalization than older social workers (Schwartz, et al., 2007).
A student working at the University of Minnesota undertook a study and survey to determine the effect of stress and tension in adolescents.
Harr, and Moore (2011) explored the psychological effects of compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction on social work students in field placement. To support their research, they conducted a study in 2007 and 2008 with BSW and MSW students in the field of social work, at public universities at the end of each semester. Students were then invited to participate in this study at the end of each semester. The results of this study discovered that these social worker students are more motivated and committed to the profession and have higher scores of compassions satisfaction than instrument average. Students' scores on risk for burnout also were higher than other helping professionals, their risk for compassion fatigue during the field experience

The mean for variable 1 (Southern Africa) is 2.48. The mean for variable 2 (North Africa) is 2.28. The standard deviation for variable 1 is 1.077 and for variable 2, 9.68. The number of participants in each condition variable 1 N = 16922 and variable 2 N = 5466.
The standard deviation scores did not possess any significant difference because the standard deviation for the experimental group was 7.78 and 7.2 for the control group, so the difference was only 0.58. However, the difference in the mean for both groups were significant in that the mean for the experimental group was 14.63 and 12.79 for the control, which is a difference of 1.84. But based on the narrative from the study, the groups were not significantly different for any of the
“I’m so stressed” is a phrase so commonly used by teens, especially to describe how they feel about school. In many ways this is true, much truer than some adults like to admit; for this reason, many colleges and professionals have done studies to research stress in students. According to a study done by NYU forty nine percent of teens said they feel overwhelmingly stressed on a daily basis, and thirty one percent said they feel somewhat stressed on a daily basis. Females tended to feel much more stressed than males. Grades, homework, and college preparation were the top reasons for students' stress. Twenty six percent scored positive for clinical Depression due to stress, and a majority of teachers could see stress affecting students as well as the school in
Our review of research on the apprehensions and anxieties of graduate Masters of Social Work students entering practice encompasses studies from 1990 through 2015. Processing the information that would be productive for valid search our research team used three search engines that produce the evidence-based material. The search engines used included: Google Scholar, Ebsco Host, and JSTOR through Arkansas State University One Search. The relevant search terms selected for this study included: stress with social work students (584hits), anxiety and MSW students (601 hits), fitness to practice, graduate education, profession (791 hits). Next we took into account the number of entries being considered; however, usually it is a small percentage of entries that are found to be relevant to the topic one is searching. Adding the search terms into various databases yielded a result of a total of 1976 articles. The first 20 results per entry were examined for relevance. Among these entries, only 10 were found relevant to the formulated question being observed. Articles that may have been prevalent yet excluded were due to no funding for the research and many of the additional articles were from other than the United States. Additionally, articles must have been written in English to be considered.
Social work within the school system is an important and necessary asset to have. It helps many students with a severity of problems that children and adolescents face, whether it be at home or at the school itself. The role of the social worker is to establish a working relationship between the school and the family. In addition, they also help make sure that the child’s needs are met, whether it be their academic achievement, social, emotional and behavioural competence. By observing the child in its environment, they establish what needs that child might have and they figure out how they can utilize that perspective on the child to ensure that they perform to the best of their abilities academically or socially. We are looking at the different polices and job duties that a social worker faces while working in a school, whether it is a child with mental health related issues or a child with learning disabilities.
Nontraditional student numbers continue to rise on college campuses and few institutions meet the mental health needs for this special group of students (Carney-Crompton & Tan, 2002). It is the purpose of this study to examine both the stressors (i.e. triggers of the stress response) and perceived stress levels between traditional and nontraditional students.
