They got into a relationship and married later. Alice and Teddy’s time together was, sadly, brief. In 1884 a double tragedy struck Teddy (Theodore Roosevelt the White House).
On February 12, Alice gave birth to a daughter, Alice Lee. Two days later, Roosevelt's mother died of typhoid fever and his wife died of kidney disease within a few hours of each other--and in the same house. (Miller Center) After the death of Teddy’s mother and Alice, Theodore moved out to the Dakota Badlands to escape his grief. Once there, Teddy “soaked into the frontier lifestyle” and bought two ranches, the Maltese Cross Ranch and the Elkhorn ranch, and invested $40,000 in cattle for the Maltese Cross Ranch (Unites States. National Park Service. History: Theodore Roosevelt: Rancher). “He flourished in the hardships of the western frontier, riding for days, hunting grizzly bears, herding cows as a rancher, and chasing outlaws as a frontier sheriff” (Miller Center).Teddy also was suited to the rancher look; he wore spurs, belt buckles, and had some pearl handled revolvers made by Tiffany’s, which was a famous jewelry store. He also had a fringed cowboy shirt made from buckskin. The whole outfit would have cost $100 which would amount to $1,000 today (Unites States. National Park Service. History: Theodore Roosevelt: Rancher). Theodore headed back to the East after a harsh winter killed off most of his cattle in 1886 (Miller Center). One of the reasons
After this tragic loss, he decided to go to a ranch that he had purchased in 1883 and become a rancher. Unfortunately, Roosevelt was not taken seriously by the locals as a real rancher, because they thought of him as a city New Yorker, who was not tough enough for the Dakota Badlands. He had to initially put up with their ridicule. But in the end, he proved them all wrong. On one occasion, he apprehended two criminals and watched them for hours before the authorities came. A newspaper wrote “Theodore is a Dakota Cowboy. When he first went on the range, the cowboys took him for a dude, but there is no man who inspires such enthusiastic regard among them as he.”
On February 14, 1884, Theodore Roosevelt's mother, (50) and wife Alice, (22) died within hours of each other. Theodore was devastated. Theodore then returned to the Badlands seeking "solitude and time to heal." that summer he started yet another ranch, the Elkhorn Ranch, 35 miles north of Medora, and hired two Maine woodsmen, Bill Sewall and Wilmot Dow, to help operate. Theodore wrote many books about his time on the Ranch: Ranch Life and the Hunting-Trail, Hunting Trips of a Ranchman and The Wilderness Hunter.

Twenty-sixth U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt, the man the teddy bear was named after, was one of the most influential presidents in American history. Roosevelt was forty-two when he took office, succeeding the death of President William McKinley who was shot and killed. Roosevelt was a very young president at the time, in fact, one of the youngest. His young age worried many people, but he still brought many very strong credentials. Before Roosevelt took office he had about twenty-five years experience in politics. Roosevelt was a very argumentative person, some say to an annoying extent (Carnes and Garraty 556). Carnes and Garraty explain Roosevelt as intelligent, imaginative, genuinely warmhearted, full of spontaneity, and very committed
They then continued on to get married in October of 1880. Soon he dropped out of college to pursue a career in public services. He was then elected to the New York Assembly where he served from 1882 to 1884. On the same year on February 12th, his wife gave birth to a little girl, Alice Lee. Two day later however, both his mother and wife died within mere hours between them. Stricken with grief Theodore tried to drown himself in political work. When this didn’t work, he left his sister in charge of his little girl and moved out west to the Dakota Badlands to raise cattle. “He flourished in the hardships of the western frontier, riding for days, hunting grizzly bears, herding cows as a rancher, and chasing outlaws as a frontier sheriff.”(Roosevelt, life before the presidency, Sidney Milkis). This life was short lived however due to a sudden and devastating winter that proceeded to wipe out most of the cattle he had owned, so he moved back east in the year 1886. After moving back he met with one of his childhood crushes and soon remarried to a woman named Edith Kermit Carow. The two then raised a family of 6 children including

Two years later, he married his childhood friend, Edith Kermit Carow. They had a total of five children, four boys and a girl: Theodore "Ted" III (1887–1944), Kermit (1889–1943), Ethel (1891–1977), Archibald (1894–1979), and Quentin (1897–1918).
Theodore Roosevelt exemplified the sentiments of the turn of the century through his electrifyingly captivating leadership and progressive ideology. His populist ideas and policies against the very powerful monopolies intrigued people and began a strong progressive movement. Even though he was the namesake for the well-know Teddy Bear, he was known for being strong and upfront when he thought something was wrong; he was a very morally driven politician. Theodore presumed to expose fraud and corruption in any political office he entered. The Republican party even went as far as to vote him into the vice presidency to keep him from running to be president but their plan would fail as not too long after the inauguration, McKinley was
