RESEARCH PROPOSAL 10 Research Proposal Introduction The existence of a myriad of social problems among teenagers that both parents and states have to deal with is a factor whose weight ought not to be treated lightly. The increasing level of drug use among the adolescents constitutes one of the ever increasing situations in the society and may, as a matter of fact, be a representation other underlying issues. The level of the situation in the contemporary world, though not discussed as much as it ought to be, has reached alarming levels. There seems to be an increasing predisposition among the use to take the drugs as it's reflected in the escalating trends of drug abuse among this generation of individuals (spooner, 1999). The ever deteriorating levels of this situation coupled with the widespread permissiveness in the society and the absence of attention from appropriate caregivers at different institutions only means that the need to address the problem is paramount. Different avenues of solutions can be applied in reducing the level of the problem and averting the massive negative consequences that come with the phenomena. Dealing with this issue is not a matter of instance as the different parameters of the problems, its causes and possible workable solutions have to be discovered. As such, research on these dynamics is a mandatory undertaking. Significance of the Study The main aim of this research proposal is to explore the extensive situation of the problem of

SSW’s have a responsibility to intervene in the problem of substance use by assisting adolescents in reducing maladaptive coping skills; interventions should be created to impact all ecologies such as the individual, home, school, and community (NASW, 2012). The SSW roles that can be used to address the issue of substance use and assist in reducing this adolescent problem behavior are the role of counselor, consultant, case manager, educator, and program developer. SSW’s will use the Response to Intervention (RTI) (Chard, 2013) multitier approach to promote prevention and deliver interventions. As the service model suggests, universal substance use prevention efforts can be targeted to all students through Tier 1 (i.e., primary prevention/intervention); all the school staff should be trained in these efforts (NASW, 2012). Students who need additional support and have been identified as being at risk of using substance use will be targeted at Tier 2 (secondary prevention); in addition to universal precautions, students will be provided with short term supplemental support at this level to reduce adolescent risk factors.
The early adolescence stage is an important developmental period where adolescence take part in risk behavioral activities such as substance use. Research supports the hypothesis that alcohol and substance use serve to reduce negative effects (Thomas, 1986). According to Galea et al., (2005), “psychological stress associated with living in urban areas with high income disparity may be associated with greater inter-individual tension and likelihood of inner-personal violence; both may be associated with increased substance use and misuse through stress processes” (p. 130). Stressful life experiences leads adolescents experiencing higher levels of negative effects to become more prone in participating with substance use. Such consideration leads to
The terrifying level according to which drug misuse has turned into a part of daily life for hundreds of thousands of youngsters has been a topic of interest among many scholars. Many youths often begin familiarizing with drugs at an age as early as 11 years. By the age of 16, almost one in ten boys is habitually engaging in drugs, comprising heroin and cocaine with the figures for girls nearly as high, rendering to a ground-breaking research. The study "Typology of Club Drug Use Among Young Adults Recruited Using Time–Space Sampling. Drug And Alcohol Dependence" analyzed trends of recent club drug uses among 400 young adults between 18-29 years. Club drugs are frequently associated with rave and club
The social problem is the condition that at least some people in community of us being undesirable. Everyone would agree about some social problems such as murders and DWI traffic deaths. Eight grade, a time of merely adolescence. It has been recorded that “by 8th grade 28% of adolescents have consumed alcohol, 15% have smoked cigarettes, and 16.5% have used marijuana. ” A drug can be defined as a something which “alters your mind or body that is not food ” something all of these substances have in common. As the years go by there has been a massive increase in underage consumption of illegal substances. These substances which young people are using are known for being very addictive, and being taken so young addiction is much more likely to occur, possibly having more severe consequences. Throughout history, a plethora of cultures have contributed to this problem of addiction which can be seen within their historical roots. The collective perception that serious drugs could cure almost anything when used for medicinal purposes, was a major ignition to the overall issue. As more and more countries began to desire these various drugs as they became more available, the use of drugs spread rapidly through what is known today as the global drug trade. Through expansion of familiar substances known as coffee, and opium during the earlier centuries, the concept of addiction has evolved into what our society has become today.
Addictive behavior may lead to addiction and when we see people with addictive substances; sometimes it is easy to emulate that behavior. According to learning theory, addictions is basically a learned behavior. For example, people learn many of their addictive behaviors through what is called classical conditioning. Furthermore, people always pair up environmental cues with addictive substances. Fortunately, many addictions can be “unlearned” and we can do this by counter-conditioning. Counter –conditioning is a type of classical conditioning and we do this by doing something called taste aversion (dislike of a specific taste). Taste aversion functions in the same was as food aversion; we pair something that provides good stimuli and within seconds a bad stimuli. Some of the problems that involved teenagers are alcohol, abuse, drug abuse, and teenage pregnancy. Many of these problems are caused by stressful events or peer pressure. Alcohol and drugs use disorders an individual’s life and have the potential to harm other in the process.
My project “Addiction Prevention” was intended to provide information to parents regarding the dangers of drug use among teens in our community, and to encourage parents to become aware of the hazards using illicit substances. I began by providing a survey to current middle school students regarding the use of illicit substances on our campus. This wasn't my first choice of how to start. I wanted to create a presentation informing our community of the top five most consumed drugs in America, that would inform teens about the dangers that alcohol or drugs possess. Then later on, my adviser and I realized that it would be more effective if I present information to parents regarding the use and availability of illicit substances using information provided by students through an anonymous survey. The purpose of giving students a survey was to enlighten parents about the realities of drug use among young students, what the students’ perceptions are about drug use, and to hopefully start a dialogue between parents and students. Doing the survey on April 8 through Google Docs using questions like “Do you think think your school is drug free?”, would help me generate stats and percentages with the intention of making parents aware of how vulnerable their child is to drugs and alcohol, and how dangerous it could be in long term and short term.

A pattern that we’ve seen erupt over the last couple of years is the habit of teenagers and young adults falling prey to party drugs, there's been a sense of normalcy placed along with a pill popping culture, you'll notice rappers almost romanticizing and influencing teenagers into experimenting with prescription drugs. What most people don't take into consideration before consuming these drugs is that most prescription opioids have addictive side effects, that when taken in long term or copious amounts can cause the user to experience withdrawals and ultimately draw them back in a continuous cycle. Most would say, why can't they just not take the drugs? Or claim it was the users fault because they know better. While they are not entirely right, it's not wrong either. Research shows that a large majority of teens will find themselves in a position where they will be offered drugs before the age of 14 at a party, this decision will ultimately affect their life in the long run, be it becoming a social outcast from their peers for not trying these drugs, or taking them and developing an addiction that will surely harm their bodies before they’ve truly became adults.
Youth in the United States face challenges every day, some more than others. These challenges can be difficult to navigate and can leave these young people finding alternative ways to cope with the stress that accompanies these challenges. According to CBS News reports a recent survey indicates approximately two million teens between the ages of 12 and 17 currently need treatment for a substance abuse problem, but only about 150,000 get the help they need. This high number is largely due to the fact that it is easy for teens to access many kinds of drugs but trying anything just once can lead to drug addiction. Teens are often more experimental than adults and willing to try anything their friends are doing,
“I’m in love with the coco” (a song depicting a love for cocaine song by O.T. Genasis), just one of the most recent songs to have explicit usage of drugs. Referring to drug usage and sales is a popular trend in today 's hip-hop and rap lyrics. As a society where do we draw the line with censorship of this material? Not only are the lyrics being said, but the drug usage is also being portrayed in the music videos; all the way from marijuana usage to cocaine and popping pills. There 's no doubt that this type of music has a negative effect on today 's youth, but by censoring, this variety of music are we in effect censoring the culture and reality that sings it.
