Despite what mankind would like to believe, humans are animals. As multi-celled organisms, we consume other organic matter, change the land for own uses as a beaver would build a dam, and as other mammals, we are all fed breast milk from our mothers when we were young. Yet there is this disconnection and alienation of the human race towards other species. Moreover, through fear of taking action, the convenience provided to us if we simply choose to ignore the environment, and the alienation of other species that are endangered by our actions, the hostile and uncaring attitude of humans towards nature is the core reason for many of the problems in our environment today.
As a 17-year old teenager going to high school, contrary to the environmental activist, David Suzuki’s, remarks about the ignorance of humans about nature, I receive much information about these kinds of problems at my school, from dedicated assemblies, eco fairs and special days that address our responsibility to deal with nature in a more responsible fashion. Yet, when the school day is over, all of the information seeps out of the roof of the school; plastic water bottles are still found in the corners of hallways and leftover Tim Hortons cups are still present in the desks of my former Business class. Even when I step inside the door of my house, the disconnection from nature is apparent. Most of my time at home is spent looking at a screen and doing homework and the only sign of nature would be the fly
“Hey guys! This is the last communication you shall receive from me. I now walk out to live amongst the wild. Take care, it was great knowing you” (Qtd. In Krakauer 69). After graduating from Emory University, Christopher McCandless abandoned everything, gave his entire savings account to charity, and then hitchhiked to Alaska to live in the wild. In the novel, Into the Wild, Was McCandless justified in shunning society? McCandless was justified in shunning society because he simply wanted to find himself and be independent without any distractions from his friends or family.
When Charles Darwin introduced the theory of evolution in his book, On the Origin of Species, a long, centuries-long debate would be sparked between those believing in creationism and those supporting in evolution. Today, the concept of evolution remains a highly argued topic due to differing opinions due to religion, personal belief, or any other of the myriad of reasons. Due to overwhelming evidence supporting evolution in humans and the benefits to students by learning about it, it is a necessity to teach human evolution in school in order to educate the younger generations.
The sad injustice to nature is that man has forgotten the biotic connection between the natural world and humanity. Whether protecting nature is a spiritual experience or simply a means for survival, nature is as much a part of human life as the human themselves. The separation created by modern environmentalism between human and non-human entities can only be reunited if people learn to view life as a part of nature. The scary part about that thought, however, is will that be enough now? Only time can
Humankind co-exists with the natural world many may say. However, humankind is constantly drifting away from nature, and we as humans no longer interact with the natural world around us. Today most of the society focuses on technology and other aspects that distract us from being in contact with nature. As we grow in our lives we seem to die in our interactions with nature, causing us to become less involved, and then that causes nature to die itself. From us neglecting the environment we suffer great consequences with the natural world and within ourselves. We lack the ability to understand and connect with the environment, and with us not focused on our world we cause it to become into dangerous hands. We no longer should just sit back and
For to long the world has ignored China's Speciesism and it's repugnant miscynist citizens living inside and outside this vile country
The natural selection process leaves the so called “unfit” to die, but is it possible to have an entire species be “unfit”? Well, yes it is possible because it has happened before but it leaves us asking how that happened. It can happen because of extreme environmental changes or even a natural disaster, but they can also all be killed off by humans or their predators. We are able to save species from extinction in many different ways. One way to save species from extinction is sanctuaries. These sanctuaries can have a few animals from an endangered species in case that extinction does happen, these animals in the sanctuaries can reproduce and save the species. Another approach to saving animals from extinction is protecting and rebuilding
We are taught about the relation of human beings with their environment from the early days of our schooling. But what we have achieved is failure in protecting our environment. We have not, as a species, come to grips with the explosive events that have changed our relationship with the planet. For most of human existence, we lived as nomadic hunter-gatherers whose impact on nature could be absorbed by the resilience of the biosphere. Even after the Agricultural Revolution 10,000
Ever since the dawn of man, humans have interacted and interfered with nature. Becoming an apex predator means having to push others out of the spotlight; over thousands of years we participated in nature's little game, we learned, we adapted, we survived! Nonetheless, others have not been that lucky. Due to human's creative ability to adapt, humanoids have spread like a wildfire in a field of dry daisies burning any creature that dared to stand in the path. Humans have helped accelerate the new age of extinction for many animal species regardless of whether nature wanted them gone or not. The human race is still developing; so primitive, yet so astute. People continue on, not fully comprehending
Armrests are very critical to be at chairs where it helps to relax the shoulders, neck and back stress. Armrest could lead to minimizing the pressure on the body by providing good surface area to contact. Armrest should be adjustable in and out, as well as up and down. This allows for convenience and better control of comfort. Armrests shouldn’t be something hard like wood, because this would cause pain for the elbows. The degree at which the armrest lays at with the arm should be more than 90°.
Your day has been great so far. You went on vacation, you found a dollar bill on the floor, you ate your favorite dish, nothing can be better than this. As soon as you walk on the boardwalk you are hoping to see big waves and fish in the sea, instead, you see dead fish and some animals floating in the water next to old car tires, trash, and fertilizer. Now you feel terrible and want to go home. Pollution is devastating. The reason why I researched this topic is that I do not want my family nor my planet to get sick. Pollution can be stopped very easily, it’s just that people “don’t know” how to stop or they just don’t care, which is a serious problem. I want people to see that pollution is mainly caused by humans, and also for them to see that it is a horrible thing that is happening. Some kids litter because they see their parents and their whole family doing it. When I was researching this topic, I noticed that I needed to find out more information, so I asked questions to myself. When did pollution get so bad? How many animals have gone extinct because of pollution? How many people die each year because of pollution? How much does everyone on the planet pollute each year? What is the best way to stop pollution? Can just one person make a difference? After a lot of research, I found out lots of ways that we can stop pollution, so it is possible to end it. Or at least improve the air.
Ethics is the study of what is right and wrong in human conduct. Environmental ethics studies the effects of human’s moral relationships on the environment and everything within it (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, 2008). The ethical principles that govern those relations determine human duties, obligations, and responsibilities with regard to the Earth’s natural environment and all of the animals and plants that inhabit it (Taylor, 1989). The purpose of this paper is to reveal environmental issues that are threatening the existence of life on Earth, and discus our social obligations to refrain from further damaging our environment, health and life for future generations. I will discus the need for appropriate actions and the ethical
An argument that has been fought over for years can be solved with a little research. So does the theory of evolution make sense or should creation be taken into consideration. Looking at nature and life is amazing, everything has so many interacte details but not all people view it the same, some people still believe in the theory of evolution or “apes to humans”.
There is no question that humans are the dominant ecological force in today’s society. If humans are the dominant force, would it not make sense that humans have the moral responsibility to protect and care for nature? Nature provides humans with the resources to survive, yet humans are the ones who are slowly destroying it. Fortunately, there are people who do believe that it is their moral responsibility to protect nature. The Conservation Movement provides an excellent example of humans being obedient in the fight for protecting nature. Unfortunately, there is also disobedience occurring that is slowing down the Conservation Movement. This disobedience comes in many forms such as the pollution of ocean waters, or the overharvesting of trees in rainforests. These acts occur from humans that are disobedient in their responsibility to protect nature. Out of all the disobedient acts that are occurring in nature, poaching proves to be one of the most severe. In Rosaleen Duffy’s book Nature Crime: How We’re Getting Conservation Wrong, she introduces the topic of poaching by writing, “Conservation International tell us that the loss of wildlife is one of the most important challenges facing our planet, that we are facing an extinction crisis to rival the end of the dinosaurs” (1). If the Conservation movement is going to make progress in the future, humans must put an end to poaching. In order for poaching to end people will have to be willing to work together, while
Despite this grim outlook, there are many ways in which species are currently being or can be helped. Because so many areas, nearly 99.4% of (or 2450) counties in the United States alone, house at least one species on the endangered species list, there are a lot of actions that can be taken to help protect and prevent the organisms living even as close as the backyard. (United) Simple action, such as decorating windows, could help to protect bird, who cannot see glass. While a seemingly small step, this would help to protect the 11% percent of known bird species that currently hold a position on the endangered species list. (Pellerin) Another way to help would be shutting the faucet off when you brush your teeth and taking shorter showers. Reducing water usage reduces the need for damming and water diversion for commercial usage, which are responsible for the loss of nearly 40 mussel and snail species. (Campbell) On a small scale, these actions have a great impact on those more local species. On the greater scale, however, and especially in terms of the animals everyone discusses, such as big cats, rhinos, and elephants, these small steps seem obsolete in the race to save biodiversity. Its pertinent to remember that “all forms of life, large and small, help maintain the land, water, and air on which our lives depend.” (Mann) In other words, all actions make a big difference when it comes to saving the ecosystems that support human life.
In the past you’ve most likely heard about the extinction of dinosaurs and other prehistoric species that used to roam the earth far before our time. However, how many of you know the actual extent of extinction and how many species disappear every day? Not many people know about the mass amount of organisms dying off each day which is not helping the chances of them having potential to survive. It may be hard to swallow, but about one hundred fifty to two hundred types of animals, insects, plants, etc die off every day and has expected to stay that way throughout the twenty first century. Though many disappear because of natural causes or because of a change in their food chain, a few go extinct because of humans. In every million species to go extinct around a hundred to a thousand are due to humans every year.
