Frederick Douglass lived in a time of great discrimination for his race and belittlement form whites. The blacks were taken into slavery and treated as less than animals by their slave owners. Frederick experienced many unnecessary whipping and other countless acts of violence being showed towards him. Frederick Douglass showed the horrors of slavery by describing his life as a plantation slave and the life of other slaves around him on the plantation and observing the cruelty of the city dwellers who owned slaves.

He emphasizes by stating, “fellow citizens, above your national, tumultuous, joy, I hear the mournful wail of millions!” In other words, his fellow brothers suffered injustices that he will not forget nor does he wish to. In the hopes to make them have an image of his people pleading for mercy. Furthermore, he explains that he is to see this from an individual’s perspective being an ex-slave himself. To demonstrate, Douglass explains how slaves are overwork, are deprive of their liberty, work without any wages given to them, and “keep them ignorant of their relations to their fellow men’, to beat them to a pulse, to whiplash until their fresh is torn from their limp bodies, to pursuit them dogs, to renounce to their relatives, to “knock their teeth”, to be malnourished and to submit to their masters wishes. This was an example of what white people have done in the past to the slaves. In giving such gruesome images, Douglass hopes to open their attitude towards the treatment of the slaves.

He writes, “there were no beds given the slaves, unless one coarse blanket be considered such.” He again appeals to pathos when describing the eating portions. Douglass explains the eating troughs used for children and says “few left the trough satisfied.” Douglass illustrates the cruel conditions slaves faced, from the bare sleeping quarters to the harsh whippings received. This effects the reader by helping them visualize the conditions the slaves were placed in. He chose to do this to inform those who weren’t aware of what was happening inside the gated properties. Douglass next establishes credibility through the use of ethos. He begins his narrative by giving background information and stating that he has “no accurate knowledge” of his age. However, the main focus of the narrative illustrates the overall elimination of slavery in society by Douglass whereas Andrew only focused upon the life experience of Douglass in his narrative rather than talking about the stereotypical idea of removing the social issues from the society. The narrative analyses the opposition that were the supporters of slavery in Maryland whereas Douglass tried to reorganize the stages of his life around the opposition of slavery and build up his own identity whether it was in North or South of America.
