High School Focus Group

I live at 383 East, 143rd street and my zip code is 10454. It is an area in which Latinos are the main population. This area is called Mott Haven in which there are many public housing projects. I live in one of the housing project in which my neighbors I can see they are mainly Hispanics and Blacks. Around my specific zip code area, there are different neighborhoods. In addition, even though these neighbourhood are very close to each other, there are still a lot of differences between them. I will focus on the varieties of people’s races that inhabit certain areas of the zip code 10454 and how certain areas have more schools while other areas have more businesses.

With a small group, discuss the following questions. Choose someone to read the question out loud, and direct the discussion so that each person can offer his/her opinion on the topic. Have another student record the group’s response and choose a third student to report the information gathered to the class in a discussion.

In my research of Austin, Texas I found out several interesting facts regarding the demographic makeup of the city. For example, the racial breakdown by race is whites 68%, blacks 8%, Hispanic are at 35% and foreign-born 18% The makeup is obviously different when you compare Austin to the US as a whole, however, it is interesting to see the “total picture”. The following is the breakdown for the US whites 72%, black 12.6%, Hispanic 17%, and foreign-born 13%.

Also within the school is a very diverse group of children with around fifty-seven percent of students identifying as white, nineteen percent identifying as black or African American, and seventeen percent identifying as Hispanic or Latino.

The Houston Area Survey shows how the city of Houston has progressed over the span of thirty-five years into an immensely diverse city that the rest of America will come to look like in the future. The city has grown from being predominately Anglo to having a nice population balance between Anglos, Latinos, African Americans, and Asians. In terms of Latinos in Houston, the study places emphasis on the differences between the first generation who are foreign-born, second generation who were born in the United States with immigrant parents, and third-generation Latinos who were born in America with American parents. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) (2015) provided an overview of the Hispanic population, in which they reported the Office of Management and Budget’s (OMB) categorization of the population. Specifically, OMB defines Hispanics as a population which comprises of Cubans, Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, South and Central Americans as well as people from other Spanish cultures (CDC, 2015). According to a report compiled by the CNN Library (2015), Hispanics are the largest minority group in the United States. In fact, the size of the Hispanic group in the United States is only second to the size of the Hispanic group in Mexico. The report further explained that there were approximately 54 million Hispanic people in the United States by 2013. The number showed a 2.1% increase in the Hispanic population between 2012 and 2013 (CNN Library, 2015). The total Hispanic population in 2013 constituted about 17% of the United States total population. Gonzalez-Barrera and Lopez (2013) inferred that people of Mexican origin constituted the largest number of Hispanics in the United States. They maintained that there were approximately 33.7 million Hispanics from Mexico in the United States by 2012 (Gonzalez-Barrera & Lopez, 2013). The Mexican-Hispanics population is represented by people who are born in the United States and immigrants from Mexico.

Buenrostro emphasized the idea of Latino children being the majority ethnicity population attending K-12th California public schools. Documenting his research process Buenrostro demonstrated many statistics on school enrollment and challenging academic performance that Latino students from grades K-6th are facing. Buenrostro ultimately concludes that the results provided in this factsheet will help school districts and board members take action and come up with an idea on what can be improved in order to help these particular students succeed and obtain necessary resources. Ultimately, this fact sheet represents an important contribution to my research topic because it addresses numerous ideas about the education system in Latino students.

New York City has always been diverse and multi-cultured. In 1980, the total population of students, with 713 schools reporting, was 519,965. Of those students, 128,690 were Non-Hispanic Whites, 194,901 were Non-Hispanic Blacks, 174,942 were Hispanic, and 21,432 were Asians. In 1990, more schools were added for a total number of 745, but the population declined to 488,377 students. While more schools were added, only the Asian population increased while the other groups decreased. The Non-Hispanic White population accounted for 94,119, the Non-Hispanic Black

Demographics and control variable. Participants reported sex, age, U. S. citizenship, ethnicity, and educational grade level.

The null hypothesis is that the lack of health literacy and utilization of available health education and information resources by Latino groups is not due to ethnic disparity. An alternative hypothesis is that this lack of health literacy and utilization of available health and information resources amongst Latinos is due to a geographical isolation.

Internal validity of this study included data collection process and student personal interest in education. For example, students may have scored in exam because they concern about their own education. Reliability of this study instrument has not been tested. This is the first time this group will have this survey. There is no former survey to use as a standard to see if there are many changes.

Paula England wanted to understand what the hooking up culture and sexuality was of college students and how it was gender based. This was her focus for her research and throughout her data she found some interesting things about the hookup culture of college students. A sample is a part of the population that represents the whole. Her sample size was 18 different universities where she gathered data, and could make inferences about the population of college students as a whole. There were two different sampling methods that were used to gather data from students, she had students use interviews and online surveys.

This survey spans across the mid-level and high-level schools of United States, which are believed to represent a cross-section of the national population. About 66 – 80% of the American schools participate in the survey on an average, and the students’ participation rate stands at an average of 79 – 83%.
