Of all the writing experience I gained through an AP heavy course load in high school, I look towards the experience I gained in one class more than anything else when it comes to the development of my reading and writing skills as a student and learner. This class was known locally in my high school as Honors Issues in Religions, taught by Mr. Burnett. The reason this class has held such an impact on me is because we were able to develop both reading and writing in a variety of ways, whether it was doing the nightly textbook reading, writing 4 essays in 90 minutes in what is known as a test in the class, the 15 page minimum research paper due at the end of the year, or even the book review done on a book of the student’s choice. All of these different aspects were able to help myself improve my skills as both a reader and writer. Each of these different tasks …show more content…
This paper was designed to gives us a small insight into what college writing would be like while still giving us the freedom to find an interesting topic that pertained to both the writer and the reader/class. What this research paper did was make me view writing in a different way, because contrary to the smaller 3 page papers I was used to knocking out in 45 minutes, I was forced to sit down and try to understand the several different research sources I had found. I also had to go more in depth with what I was writing and formulate my sentences to try and explain and help the reader understand what I was trying to say about my topic while still trying to open the reader up to my point of view. All while writing this paper our teacher was also giving back mass amounts of constructive criticism at a college level to help improve our writing skills. This research paper help expand how I viewed writing essays past that of regular required 5 body paragraph essays that can be done in 45 minutes of one English
In reviewing the essay, there are many errors I noticed. Overall, your writing lacks focus in regards to ideas, grammar, and spelling. I am no expert in any of these areas, but my ability to produce a coherent essay is demonstrated by the fact that I am nearly done with college. The goal of my essay is to guide you towards a better way of writing based on my prior experiences. A good essay in my experience is one that has three major components: structure, depth, and voice.
I first started writing around when I was in the third grade. I loved to read fiction and I wanted to write it too. That year I had a story about my hair published in an Akron newspaper. Getting that story published made me feel really excited about something and I wanted to continue to do it forever. Eventually, we had to start to learn to write in cursive and I hated it so, I slowed down on writing during school and at home. I would still get good grades on reports and writing assignments but I never enjoyed it as much. I could never find the desire to write but when I did write I was never happy with the outcome.
Finding the motivation to sit down and write, or read has always been a challenge for me. The amount of books I have actually read all the through in the past few years of my life is slim to none. Really the only time I will read is for a school assignment, or if it’s required for a job. As I grow older I am starting to realize the importance of good reading, and writing skills. Having the ability to write what needs to be written, whether than just what you want to write can be difficult. I have always been the best at writing essays when there is a lot of freedom to write what you want. The times where I have to follow a particular structure is when coming up with original ideas can be a huge challenge.
My best piece of writing for this class would be the annotated bibliography because there was a structure that I was supposed to follow, so I was more confident since I knew what to write. My writing process didn’t change much because I would write the topic sentence or a brief sentence of what I knew I wanted to talk about in a paragraph, then went back to discuss my ideas after writing down some other topic sentences. However, I did change how I edit my papers. I used to go back and edit everything on the final draft, but this time around, after every draft, I would try my best to edit at least one or two things within a paragraph.
My writing process begins with my brainstorming ideas and writing them down on a separate piece of paper. That way I already know what Im going to be writing about and not just putting down a bunch of gibberish into my assignment. But this process only works if im having to writing an actual story or when doing a persuasive essay. Once all my ideas are jot down or I have what I’m going to write about in my head, I start writing my paper.
Writing. I believe I know a thing or two about writing, I am able to create a text that successfully accomplish its purpose. But i also have numerous flaws and mistakes.
Writing is no were near my strongest subject but everyone has their weak and strong subjects when it comes to education. I strive to become a phenomenal writer one day, to become a great writer requires a lot of work. This work I would have to do demands for a great amount of consistency. My writing experience has been filled with a lot of learning and recognizing that I still need help. I am not at all the best writer. I have yet to grasp the full knowledge of writing an academic paper. Some things I remember from high school, but other things are new to me. Focusing on my weaknesses is key while acknowledging me strengths. As a writer, I can find good research and come up with transition sentences but I tend to add extra information that is not relevant to the essay and I struggle with in-text citations.
In the modern age, many people live in the United States, a culturally diverse country. Most people that I have come across here, especially students, believe that writing is a gift of God received at birth. "I am not a good writer!" they say. It is not uncommon for me or my friends to often find themselves struggling with writing a paper, or even a simple email. However, I feel, that we all forget to acknowledge the fact that writing is a challenging task and requires practice. Even a good writer can have a hard time in expressing himself. No one is a qualified writer from birth. It is an individual's dedication and hard work that makes him better in his skills of writing. It is very important to be a sound writer since it plays a vital
I believe the importance of writing is to convey the writes thought and feelings. Another important aspect of writing is if the reader gained anything of value while reading the piece of literature. In order to relate to the reader, a writer must have dependable set of writing skills to engage the reader. During this course, I believe my writing skills have been improved upon. I have become more comfortable with my writing weaknesses and challenge myself more when writing.
A writer is someone who writes in a specific way. Such as Charles Dickens, Ernest Hemingway, Mark Twain, F. Scott Fitzgerald, John Steinbeck, Emily Dickinson and William Shakespeare. All are amazing writers who were taught to understand when to use the 3 appeals and how to use each effectively. Thus making their compositions stronger and marvelous enough to last through generations upon generation.
While I’m relatively comfortable and confident in math, the sciences, and in foreign languages, it’s always been the art of writing that’s been my Achilles heel. Throughout high school this has caused me the most concern and self-doubt. My writing skills are adequate but I want more than mediocrity; at Williams, writing well will be central to my success in whatever I choose to study.
I feel that the College Writing course benefited my ability as a writer. It increased my confidence about college-level academic writing. I now feel I have broadened my range of different issues and I am much more comfortable discussing and writing about them. Moreover, After writing down two assignments, summary, and an analysis, using different writing concepts from "Reading 3" I have enhanced my style of writing that it had introduced to me. The two assignments that I worked on for this Directed Self-Placement test really challenged me to revise my writing. My first assignment served as a preface to the new style of academic writing. My focus in this assignment was not on strictly enforcing the writing concepts taught to me, rather learning
My experiences in writing have been minimal. I have only learned the basics of writing, like putting together sentences, forming paragraphs with sentences, and things like that. Since I have been taking college English, I can tell my writing has improved a lot. In the future, I hope to be able to improve tremendously at writing essays, paragraphs, research papers, documents, and stories so that I have very little to no errors with drafting and final products. I predict I will be a well rounded writer when I graduate from college.
As a GSW 1110 College Credit Plus student through Bowling Green State University, I have learned many valuable skills throughout my writing career. I was introduced to many new writing styles, which helped me grow as a writer. I found myself getting frustrated when I was unsure of how to address some aspects of a paper, but after reviewing with my peers and instructor, I found that those task came naturally to me. I have learned how to effectively: find credible research, write to opposing audiences, write to a variety of genres, draft papers, dodge writing mechanics, and use critical thinking skills. Throughout my time as a College Credit Plus student, I have learned many tips and tricks which have all made me a more advanced writer and will all help me pass this class and future classes.
Over the first semester of my college career, I have written four papers in my General Studies Writing Class. The class started out with a Literacy Narrative, where I wrote about my past writing, and how I have improved throughout high school. The next paper was a book evaluation. It was over Hillbilly Elegy, by J.D. Vance. It was the common read for the incoming freshman this year at Bowling Green State University, so it was a book everyone in our class had been exposed to before hand. The next two dealt with education, both public and higher. We analyzed what the “point” of education is, and also whether liberal arts education was better than job training schools. These four papers are unlike most that I had written in high school, so it challenged me to think more critically and challenge many of my own opinions. It has given me a new perspective of many ideas, and even writing in general.
