Delegation by the Registered Nurse Lindsay Truong College of Southern Maryland The American Nurse Association defines delegation as “the transfer of responsibility for the performance of an activity from one individual to another while retaining accountability for the outcome” (Cherry, 2011). The nurse should be comfortable assisting the delegated person with performing the assigned tasks when needed and also be able to clarify any questions they might have about the task. This is not possible if the task assigned is not in the RN’s own scope of practice. The RN must know the tasks he or she can or cannot delegate.
