Evaluating a source The source I will be evaluating is POLICE PRESENCE, RAPID RESPONSE RATES, AND CRIME PREVENTION , a study conducted by Sarit Weisburd. The two categories that will be used to evaluate the source are credibility and usefulness. Finding reliable and trustworthy sources for an academic paper is essential when conducting research. Academic studies are the best sources because they are written by experts and peer-reviewed by other experts in various fields. Weisburd's study on police presence, rapid response rates, and crime prevention supports my essay on the effects of police presence to help deter crime. Since the study is an academic study that has been peer-reviewed, it meets both requirements for credibility and usefulness. The first value used to evaluate this source is the credibility of the source. To establish credibility, we must first look at the person who wrote the paper which for this paper is Sarit Weisburd. Sarit Weisburd has a Ph.D. and is an Associate Professor at the Hebrew University Business School. By establishing her credentials as an expert, we can also see that her work is reliable because her work is submitted to be peer-reviewed as academic work. With a Ph.D., she has the education to show that she is qualified to do the research on an expert level while citing her sources of other known works to help substantiate her claims in her papers. The next value we will measure this source by is the usefulness of the source regarding my current work. My current paper I am writing is about police presence in residential neighborhoods and how increased police presence reduces crime. Sarit Weisburd’s paper also covers police presence and how it helps with crime prevention. She used her research to get information on the Dallas police department. By calculating how the police patrolled and how it relates to crime prevention she was able to draw a conclusion based on her sample about the
effectiveness of police presence. In her study, she found that by increasing police presence she was able to find that crime was lower in not just her study, but also other studies done by experts. These are just some of the examples of why this source meets both requirements of a good source. The source is a paper done by an expert on a relevant topic. By using this paper, I am to take some of the statistics and quotes and use them in my paper to better support my claims. If my work is properly cited, I can benefit from using this source in my work. These are just some of the reasons I believe this source is both credible and useful in my current academic work. What types of questions did you ask yourself when evaluating the credibility and usefulness of your source? (2-3 sentences) One of the first questions I ask when evaluating a source is whether it is useful to my current work. If it will help prove or disprove my current work, I will then go on to evaluate if the author of the work is trustworthy. If it is a credible source, such as a work written by an expert, then I will use it and cite the author in my work. How do you feel this evaluation practice will help you as you continue to move through the research process? (2-3 sentences) The evaluation process will aid me in my research by helping support my view on a topic. Also, by using this method, I will ensure that I only use sources that can be trusted by authors who know what they are talking about or researched enough to become informed on a topic. References
