2 Textbook Critique: Paper Proposal Assignment Within multicultural counseling practices, it is crucial that counselors, therapists, and other healthcare professionals remain unbiased as well as culturally competent within all aspects. It is important that counselors build sturdy and trustworthy relationships with their patients/clients, getting to know them, where they come from, what their home life looks like, their cultural and racial backgrounds, etc. Religious and spiritual morals, values, and beliefs are also included in being culturally competent, as well as having a better understanding of the patient (Sue et al., 2022, p. 43). Lyon et al. (2019) address religious and spiritual issues within college counseling, and how these issues affect multicultural counseling in regards to the topics of gender identity, sexual preference, etc. Challenges such as these are incredibly prevalent on the average college campus, therefore making it crucial for these counselors to have a good understanding and awareness of them and knowing how to combat and work through them. Matthew 7:1-5 tells Christians to not judge a brother for their wrongdoings before evaluating themselves, making sure that they are not acting out of hypocrisy (CITE HERE). This passage of scripture is a great reminder for counselors to set aside bias, especially in the terms of differences in worldviews and religious morals and values. Within their study, Lyon et al. (2019) surveyed 216 counselors on college campuses throughout the nation. In this survey, the participants were asked about their personal experience and ideals on including religious and spiritual issues within multicultural counseling. They measured religious/spiritual integration in multicultural counseling, religious commitment, multicultural sensitivity and commitment, rationale for integration/separation (Lyon et al., 2019).
