Escape Extinction 1 Escape Extinction: Controversial Treatment Bracy M. Cato Capella University PSY7710: Ethics App Behavior Analysis Professor Capell
Escape Extinction 2 Introduction This week, we focus on controversial treatments that are used in applied behavioral analyst (ABA). In ABA treatments that are based in evidence are used. Treatments such guided compliance, attention extinction, and escape extinction, are three controversial treatments used in ABA. A treatment that is often used in ABA is escape extinction. RBTs are often told to not allow a client to escape a task or an SD given. RBTs, are also taught not to allow a client to leave a room without permission. In this paper, I will focus on escape extinction and the pros and cons of escape extinction. What is escape extinction? Escape extinction is a treatment that does not allow an individual to leave or avoid a non- preferred task. Escape extinction works as such: placing a demand, and the demand still being in place even if there is problem behavior. For example, telling a child that they have to do their homework, and the child screams and runs away. Instead of allowing the child to leave, you would block their access and have the child sit and do their home work. There are advantages and disadvantages of using escape extinction. One disadvantage of using escape extinction, is making the task or the area aversive. For example, the task of homework would never be fun to the child, because they are always forced to do it. An advantage of escape extinction, is having the task completed that you asked the child to do. In this paper, we will explore more advantages and disadvantages of escape extinction. Advantage of Escape Extinction The advantage of using escape extinction is: the target challenging behavior will decrease over time, the challenging behavior is no longer reinforced, and it can be practical and natural in
Escape Extinction 3 certain situations. In ABA, some of the goals is to reduce problem behavior. Extinction has been proven to be effective. Extinction can be used in any sitting: home, school, and daycare. When trained correctly anybody can implement extinction. Disadvantage of Escape Extinction According to Ch azin & et. (2021), “escape e xtinction can increase risk of injury, restrict autonomy, and worsen the learner implementer relationship”. ( p.1) When implementing escape extinction, the technician or the parent would “hold escape contingent on challenging behavior”. When implementing escape extinction, one would use: physical prompting, repeating task directions, and blocking escape attempts. According to Chazin & et. (2021), “the use of restrictive procedures increases risk of harm to the learner and implementer, particularly when the learner struggles against physical prompts.” (p.3) When doing escape extinction, the technician or parent are constantly presenting an aversive task or demand. According to Chazin & et. (2021), “when aversive stimuli are repeatedly paired with the instructional setting, materials, and implementer, these contextual st imuli an become conditioned punishers.” (p.2) In ABA, punishment is a last resort, and not one that is often used. So, when using escape extinction, it is important to not use it if it has become a punishment for the child. Ethics codes related to Escape extinction As far as ethics codes and escape extinction, it is important to remember some of the codes and to think if escape extinction violates some of the code of ethics. Section 2, of the ethics codes speaks of being responsible in practice. According to the BACB ethics code, section 2.01 states, “Behavior analysts prioritize clients’ rights and needs in service delivery. They provide services that are conceptually consistent with behavioral principles, based on scientific
