Haleigh Behncke Module 1 Assignment Sept. 3rd, 2023 Chapter 1 2. What are the five management skills? Do all sport managers need these skills? - The five management skills are; technical skills, people skills, communication skills, conceptual skills, and decision-making skills. Yes, all sports managers need these skills in order to run a successful organization. The reading (Lussier & Kimball, 2014, 9) talks about how being a sports manager comes with budgets and the knowledge of accounting, therefore technical skills and computer skills are essential for all managers. People skills are just as important because it will make your colleagues, parents, and players want to be a part of your organization. With people skills comes communication skills, without both of these becomes an ineffective sports manager. Following, conceptual skills come into play when sports managers are planning an event that requires project management. Lastly, but most importantly, decision-making skills create success for managers or can also determine failure if executed poorly. 4. What are the three management roles? Do all sport managers perform all three roles? - The three management roles are interpersonal roles, informational roles, and decisional roles. All sports managers perform all three roles when necessary while performing management functions to achieve objectives (Lussier & Kimball, 2014, 14). Interpersonal roles include figurehead, leader, and liaison. Informational roles include monitor, dissemination, and spokesperson. Lastly, decisional roles include entrepreneur, disturbance handler, resource allocator, and negotiator. 6. Is it more important for a sports manager to be efficient or effective? Can you be both? - It is important for a sports manager to be both efficient and effective. Efficient means getting the most out of your available sources, and effective means doing the right thing to attain your objective (Lussier & Kimball, 2014, 7). Using both is vital for short term and long term growth in your organization or business. Being effective will set you up for success by making the right things efficient rather than wasting time on something that is lacking in either category. 8. Can college students develop their management skills through a college course? Why or why not? - College students can develop their management skills to a certain extent through a college course. Gaining experience in the workplace and completing programs and courses will help develop these skills (Lussier & Kimball, 2014, 8). It is important for managers to carry on the skills that they learned in the classroom to their work
environment. A program called NASSM is the major professional association for sport management college and university academics. The program has been reviewed and has met the required approval standards that are indicated. With that being said, management skills can be developed through college courses because NASSM influences sport management curriculum in colleges. 10. What are the three career paths in sport management that you find interesting? - Athletic directing has always been a top interest of mine. As a middle manager (Lussier & Kimball, 2014, 16), I would be implementing top management strategies by developing short term operating plans. A second and third interest of mine would be first- line managers which includes a coach or supervisor for a sports company. With this I would be implementing middle managers’ operational plans. 12. Are you interested in being a manager? - Yes, I am interested in being a manager, I have always wanted to be an Athletic Director, whether that was for a highschool, college, or one day a professional team. As said in (Lussier & Kimball, 2014, 5), every college needs an athletic director but a career path that can also be taken in the collegiate position is a sport information director. Therefore, there is always a need for managers in the sports world. 14. Is your college professor a manager? Why or why not? - Just as a manager a professor also possesses the skills that a manager needs. These skills include technical skills to be able to put assignments together and navigate the computer systems. People skills to be able to work well with their students and their fellow teachers. Communication skills also coincide with this which allows them to motivate and lead others through interpersonal skills. Their conceptual skills allow them to create assignments and put together a syllabus for the year. Lastly, their decision making skills help them solve problems and allows them to decide on the important parts that they want to teach their students. Chapter 2 2. Do you think that all sport organizations should use TQM? Why or why not? - All sports organizations should use TQM because it helps build the quality of the organization around the customer to provide that customer satisfaction. If all organizations use TQM their success rate and revenue for products will sky rocket. In (Lussier & Kimball, 2014, 31) the author states that “TQM believes that customers (fans) assess the quality of the organization’s outputs by comparing what they want from the product or service with their actual use of, or experience with the product or service”. 4. What technological breakthrough in sports has had the greatest impact on the quality of your life, and why?
- Technology in sports continues to advance on a yearly basis. While being a part of the sport industry and being involved in sports my whole life, it is amazing to see the technological advancements that are in this world now. A technological breakthrough that has had the greatest impact on my life was being able to connect with college coaches through a website called NCSA. This website helped me get the opportunity to play college ball as well as get an idea of how I want to conduct my coaching/recruiting when I get the opportunity to become a coach. 6. Categorize a few sport companies you are familiar with as international or multinational. - A few international sport companies that I am familiar with are NASSM, FIFA, and IOC (Lussier & Kimball, 2014, 36). Internationalization is not new to sport, bringing it centuries ago to the Olympics that were held in Greece. As mentioned above, the IOC is now running and in charge of the Olympic games. Yes, there are many sports played around the world, but the way that they are categorized and managed varies greatly upon organizations. 8. Do you believe that ethical behavior pays off in the long run? Why or why not? - Yes, ethical behavior is shown to pay off in the long run. The media shows constant scandals that are drawn by unethical behaviors in the sport industry. Some seem to believe that unethical behavior results in short-term gains, but looking long-term, there are often consequences and people having to pay the price for their actions. Recruiters are seeking ethical job candidates, and graduates are applying to organizations that have ethical products, practices, and reputations for being ethical (Lussier & Kimball, 2014, 40). So in short, yes ethical behavior does pay off in the long run. 10. Can ethics be taught and learned? Defend your position. - In my opinion, ethics can be taught and learned. Just like teaching a child right from wrong, one can also learn right from wrong through experience. In any job there is a “Code of Ethics” that the employees have to abide by. In a circumstance where sports managers have to teach their employees as well as their athletes the code of ethics, they also have to learn before being taught. It can be taught in a variety of ways, such as classes, personal experience, or by examples. The main concept of learning ethics would be through personal experience, although teaching would be a good strategy. 12. If you were a CEO, what level of social responsibility would you aspire to? How might you go about attaining it? - Being a CEO is more than just making sure that your organization is taken care of, it entails being involved in the community as well as being socially involved with other organizations. The level of social responsibility that I would aspire to would be Social Involvement. It is important for your organization to give back to those that give to you. As the CEO it is your job to make sure that your program is providing an ethical social
