Social Emotional Intelligence Power Skill SEI Skill Sets Scenario Self-awareness Self-efficacy Self confidence A co-worker of mine seemed offended when I presented my point of view regarding the patient's assessment. Then, she snapped at me, saying that I should assess the patient because I am the RN and she is the LPN. This comment felt to me uncalled for and rude. My first impulse was to get back to her, but I used the rational part of my brain and considered that it would be better to pause and not continue the conversation. Here was when I used my superpowers, self-efficacy, and self-confidence. I approached her a little later when things cooled off. I gave her the benefit of the doubt and asked a few questions to understand what happened. It turned out that she felt it was more than her ability to assess, but because of her strong personality, it sounded aggressive. I did not let my emotions lead the conversation, but I used my self-confidence to remain firm in my conviction that "killing with kindness" is the best approach. Self-management Goal setting Stress-management One of my goals is to use my next two and a half years to gain as much work experience as possible, accumulate the most knowledge possible, successfully finish the NP program, pass the state board exam, and ultimately offer the best quality care. I applied my goal-setting and stress management superpowers. I planned to get a job at Mayo Clinic to learn medical skills from the best. Also, knowing how stressful working and studying can be, I have learned and applied the MBSR methods to reduce it. Interpersonal communication Active listening Caring&consideratio n It happens to see nurses struggling with stressful situations on the floor. Sometimes they do not ask for help because they do not want to appear weak. For example, a new graduate nurse was having trouble assessing a declining patient and was having doubts about whether or not she should address it. She was intimidated by the situation and did not dare to ask for help. I saw her struggling. I used the active listening method. I approached her, smiling with a relaxed body position, nodding, and using words that conveyed an understanding and non-judgemental attitude. Using words of encouragement, she felt the support offered. Finally, she started to feel more confident in her ability to assess and make decisions knowing that there would always be somebody for her. Executive function Research Curiosity I used to work in a hospital where transferring a patient between departments led to omitting details about a patient's
medical information. Although even the details omitted were not critical, it often provoked frustration because, this way, the healthcare process was not efficient. So, the conclusion was that there was a communication gap between departments. So, I started to research hospital policies, investigate the administrative part of document flow, and what information would be imperative to report to eliminate this problem. Finally, I proposed to create a universal report form to be used by the different departments involved in patient care. Curiosity is the force that leads to enhanced knowledge. Seeing different patients react differently to the standard treatment happened to me. I noticed doctors approaching the treatment from a different angle. I was always asking what the determining facts behind their decision were. I wanted to understand the reasoning, pathophysiology, and all that to offer with better care in mind. Social awareness Sociability Perspective taking This winter, I had a traveling assignment. Nurses from different states gathered together to work in a small space, a modified RV, to care for post- covid patients. Everybody was new. It was an awkward situation because we did not know each other. We did not know how to work together, and the rules were not clear. There was miss communication, delay in care, and overall a lot of tension in the air. We were looking for solutions. One of my co- workers advanced team building idea. I hadn't been involved before in this type of activity. I did not know what to expect, and I applied the power skills of perspective taking and sociability. I was willing to be open-minded to see alternative points of view, and at the same time, this was an opportunity to engage in a social event. Team-building brought us together, building effective working relationships, reducing team members' role ambiguity, and increasing productivity.
