Physical health is how well your body functions and how you care for it. It affects your well-
being, disease risk, mental health, and ability to do everyday activities. Physical health is
essential for my age because it can improve my brain health, help manage weight, reduce disease
risk, strengthen bones and muscles, and improve my quality of life. I will discuss my plan of
action to optimize my health and improve my chances of enjoying good health as I age.
I am a seven-year breast cancer survivor and have had a problem with my weight. Many think I
look great but don't always feel great and have problems climbing three flights of stairs to my
office. There are several things that I can do to get a hold of my physical health.
Innovative dietary choices and exercise programs for physical and mental health can help you
prevent excess weight gain, lower your risk of chronic diseases, improve your mood and energy,
and enhance your sleep quality.
There are so many different diet plans out there, and I have tried them all.
The diet plan I have chosen is the Ketogenic diet plan. "The ketogenic diet (or keto diet, for
short) is a low-carb, high-fat diet that offers many health benefits. The ketogenic diet involves
consuming a meager amount of carbohydrates and replacing them with fat to help your body
burn fat for energy. Health benefits include weight loss and lowering your risk for certain
diseases" (Mawer, 2020).
I have to exercise physically more. I enjoyed exercising. I had a routine for over a year until I
hurt my ankle. There are exercises that I can do that will take the strain off of the ankle. Some
full-body exercises that take the pressure off the ankles are Towel Scrunches, Deficit Calf Raises,
Clamshells, and Side Lying Leg Raises. The plan is to start with fifteen minutes a day and work
my way up to forty-five minutes daily.
Life, especially recently, has been very stressful for me and the people around me. There are
many ways to improve happiness and sleep habits. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2016,
my son was diagnosed with neuroblastoma cancer in 2018, my daughter was shot and now is
paralyzed from the waist down in 2019, my brother was hurt in an ATV accident in 2020, left
with nerve damage, and my father died in December 2021. I was placed on a low-dose
antidepressant and continued to worship God.
Good sleep improves your brain performance, mood, and health. It also supports growth,
development, immunity, and weight management. The National Sleep Foundation recommends
that adults get at least seven hours of sleep each night for proper cognitive and behavioral
functions. I was only getting about four to five hours of sleep a night. Between work, school, and
family, more hours need to be in the day. It isn't that I wouldn't be lying down my mind just
wonders. I started listening to white noise on YouTube, which relaxes me and allows me to get
more sleep. I will be at seven or more hours a night in six months.
Since I have been in school, my social life has been less active. My daughter and best friend say,
"When I am asked to do something, I always say that I have schoolwork." I promised them that
after graduation, I would make up for it. Improving existing relationships and building new ones
is an integral part of my social health. Social health is the aspect of overall well-being that stems
from connection and community. It’s about having close bonds with family and friends, enjoying
belonging to groups, and feeling supported, valued, and loved.
My mom didn't raise me, so our relationship isn't what I want, but it is better than it has been. I
have invited her on small road trips with my daughter and me. We attend the same church, and
through that, we both have a spiritual connection with God, improving our relationship daily.

You work in a research organization that is looking for markers of various diseases that can be used as a diagnostic for the disease. It has been reported in the past that high levels of Cu are found in the sweat of people with cystic fibrosis. One of the research projects is focused on looking for high levels of Cu in samples that can be obtained non-invasively such as saliva, sweat, hair, nails, etc.
The lab will analyze large samples for Cu. What instrument would you recommend purchasing to support this work, Atomic absorption spectrophotometer or an inductively coupled plasma atomic spectrophotometer? Explain the basis for your decision.

Dr. X claims that she has found a new remedy (carrot extract) to cure acne. She scores an interview with the science writer for a local newspaper, and gets a brief article written about her and her claims in that newspaper. The article does not contain any experimental evidence, but mentions that Dr. X accidentally splashed some carrot extract on her face and found that the acne was reduced a few days later. Student Y finds the article and cites it as a source for a paper he is writing for class, as evidence that acne has been cured.
(a) Is this finding a fact, a theory, a hypothesis, or an observation? Explain why you think so.
(b) Was it OK for Student Y to use the newspaper article as evidence for his paper? Explain why or why not.
